Jesus taught his disciples that he was the suffering Son of Man and Peter got mad and rebuked him (Mark 8:31-32). He taught the crowd (John 12:34) that he was the Son of Man who would be lifted up on the cross and they said, "Who is this Son of Man?" He disappointed John the Baptist by not bringing political deliverance and getting John out of prison: "Are the Coming One, or should we look for someone else?" (Matthew 11:2-3=Luke 7:19-20). These three passages, each from a different strand of the gospel tradition (the "triple tradition," John, and "Q" [found in Matthew and Luke but not in Mark]) show by their agreement ("Multiple Attestation") that Jesus' self-concept of the Redeemer was not in agreement with the majority view of the Jewish people at this time.
